Flight Ultra Travel Ukulele Review

Flight Ultra Travel Ukulele

Introduction

Aloha friends. Today I am reviewing the Flight Ultra Travel Ukulele from Flight’s Ultra Travel series, specifically in the Lake color.

This is a very different kind of ukulele. It is not trying to sound like a traditional wooden instrument. Instead, it focuses on durability, portability, and being easy to live with. After spending time with it indoors, outdoors, and letting my kids play it, this ukulele made its purpose very clear.

I also shared my full review on YouTube, where I play it and talk through what I like about it. If you want to hear the sound instead of just reading about it, the video will give you a much better feel for how this uke actually plays. You can check it out and buy this ukulele at this link.

First Impressions

Right away, I liked the included carrying case. It is a simple drawstring bag, but it feels light, easy to use, and fits the travel idea perfectly.

When I pulled the ukulele out, my first impression surprised me. The color looks good, and the feel is better than expected. Even though it is made from polycarbonate, it does not feel overly plasticky. The surface has a slight texture, which helps it feel more comfortable in your hands.

Why I Got This Ukulele

I bought this ukulele with a specific reason in mind. My son Mac is three, and blue is his favorite color. More importantly, this ukulele is made from polycarbonate, which is a very durable, high-quality plastic.

Because of that, I do not worry about it getting dropped or handled roughly. He has already played it at church. He was just strumming, but it held up well, and it was a fun experience. That durability alone makes this ukulele appealing for kids and stress-free playing.

Material and Travel Use

The polycarbonate body is one of the biggest advantages of this ukulele.

With wooden ukuleles, you always have to think about humidity and temperature changes. Wood can crack if it gets too dry, and instruments often go out of tune when the temperature changes.

To test this, I tuned the ukulele indoors and then brought it outside where the temperature was different. When I checked it again with a tuner, it stayed almost perfectly in tune. That is a big deal if you want a ukulele you can take anywhere or leave in your car.

Looks and Design

Visually, the Lake color looks clean and fun. It feels playful without looking like a toy.

Looking more closely, there are a few small imperfections. The finish shows slight inconsistency, almost like overspray. The plastic molding is not perfectly flawless either. That said, these details do not really matter for what this ukulele is meant to be.

This is a beater ukulele. It is an intro ukulele. It is something you bring to the beach, the park, or on a trip without stress.

Flight Ultra Travel Ukulele Back

On the back, there is a curved arch. This design helps with sound projection and shows that Flight put real thought into making this a true travel instrument.

Sound

You should not expect a warm, traditional wooden tone from this ukulele.

Instead, the sound is bright, clear, and surprisingly loud. It does not sound muffled at all and projects very well. The fluorocarbon strings add to that brightness and clarity.

For settings like the beach, camping, or singing around a campfire, this kind of sound works really well. It cuts through outdoor noise and carries better than you might expect.

Fingerpicking sounds clean and defined, and strumming feels lively. Even my son gave it a thumbs up, which feels like an honest review.

Build Quality

Considering the price, the build quality is quite good.

This ukulele sits at the very bottom of the playable ukulele price range. Below this, you mostly find souvenir instruments or toys that do not sound good or hold tuning.

Keeping that in mind, this ukulele punches above its weight. It holds tuning well, feels solid, and stays playable. There are small cosmetic imperfections, but nothing that affects function.

Build quality rating: 7 out of 10

Playability

This is a very playable ukulele and very beginner friendly.

It is easy to hold, easy to get sound out of, and forgiving for new players. That makes it a great first ukulele, especially for kids.

It also works extremely well as a leave-in-the-car ukulele. With a wooden instrument, temperature changes can be stressful. With this one, that stress is mostly gone.

Who This Ukulele Is For

This ukulele makes sense for several types of players.

For beginners, this gets an easy A+.
For kids, it is durable and forgiving.
For travelers, it is light and low maintenance.
For players who already own wooden ukuleles, it works well as a worry-free backup.

Ratings

Taking price and purpose into account, here is where it lands.

  • Overall rating: 8 out of 10
  • Value for money: 9 out of 10
  • Sound: 8.5 out of 10
  • Build quality: 7 out of 10
  • Playability: Very beginner friendly.

Final Verdict

The Flight Ultra Travel Ukulele does exactly what it is designed to do.

It is durable, affordable, easy to play, and perfect for situations where a traditional wooden ukulele would feel risky. It is not meant to replace a solid wood instrument, but it does not try to.

If you want a beginner ukulele, a kid-friendly option, or a true travel and beater ukulele you can take anywhere without worry, this is a solid choice.

Aloha, and I will see you next time on Ray’s Ukulele.
