Instructor Ray Banks

The A minor chord is one of the easiest and most essential chords to learn on the ukulele. If you want to play hundreds of popular songs, mastering this chord and knowing how to effortlessly transition out of it is your ticket to success.

In this quick tutorial, I'll show you exactly how to finger the A minor chord and reveal the absolute easiest way to transition directly into the F chord without losing your rhythm.

  • A minor Chord Diagram
Step 1: The A Minor (Am) Chord
To play the A minor chord, simply take your middle finger and place it on the second fret of the top string (the G string). Let all the other strings ring open. It really is that simple!
  • F Chord Transition Diagram
Step 2: The Easy Transition to F
The best part about the A minor chord is how beautifully it transitions into the F chord. Keep your middle finger locked in place on the top string, and just add your pointer finger to the first fret of the third string (the E string).

Friendly Reminder: Whenever you are pressing down on a string, always make sure to place your finger just before the metal frets (the metal bars you see across the neck), rather than directly on top of them. This will guarantee a clear, buzz-free sound!
