How to Play the Ukulele the Easy Way for Beginners

R
Instructor Ray Banks

I can teach you how to play the ukulele in exactly 30 seconds. Yes, you read that right! Many beginners spend weeks agonizing over confusing music theory before they ever play a single song. But the truth? It is so easy a toddler could do it. You don't need to learn a dozen shapes today. First, you just need three foundational chords to unlock hundreds of popular songs. Simply grab your uke and place your fingers exactly where I do on the fretboard below.

  • A Minor Ukulele Chord Diagram
Step 1: The A Minor (Am) Chord

Place your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the top string (the G string). Leave the other three strings open. It's that simple!
  • G Major Ukulele Chord Diagram
Step 2: The G Major Chord

Place your index and middle fingers on the 2nd fret of the C and A strings. Then drop your ring finger onto the 3rd fret of the E string in between them.
  • C Major Ukulele Chord Diagram
Step 3: The C Major Chord

Place your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the bottom string (the A string). Keep the other three strings totally open.

Now that you have your basic shapes, next you need a reliable strum pattern to bring the music to life. We are going to use a driving, universally loved rhythm: down, down, up, down, up, down, down, up, down, up. Keep your strumming wrist incredibly loose and let gravity do the work! After that, you just need to repeat, repeat, repeat! Grab your ukulele, hit play on the video above, and let's see if I can teach you a lifelong skill in half a minute.
