This Is Exactly What a Perfectly Tuned Ukulele Sounds Like

R
Instructor Ray Banks

All right, so this is what a tuned ukulele should sound like! Every single note should ring out crisp, clear, and perfectly balanced. Standard tuning for a soprano, concert, or tenor ukulele is G-C-E-A, and starting with a standard reference tone is the absolute best way to train your ears.

If your strings sound muddy, out-of-tune, or loose when you play them together, your chords will struggle to sound clean even if your finger placement is completely perfect. Take a moment to listen closely to standard reference pitches in our quick guide below.

  • Perfect Tuned Ukulele Pitch
    Standard GCEA Tuning Pitch Reference

G (4th string, closest to your face), C (3rd string, lowest pitch note), E (2nd string), and A (1st string, closest to the floor). Listening to a reference track daily dramatically improves your pitch identification and setup speed!

Tip: Always tune up to the note! If a string is flat (too low), tighten it gradually until it matches the reference pitch. If it's sharp (too high), loosen it first so it's flat, then tune upward to lock in the tension and avoid slippage!
